Family Book Discussion
The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch
April 14, 2010
The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Parent Association invites all interested students, parents and community members to attend a family book discussion of The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch’s inspirational best-seller.  The discussion will take place on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Library.
The Last Lecture is one of this year’s HF Reads selections.  HF Reads is a schoolwide reading program with the mission of creating a culture of reading and literacy through a sharing of books centered on a common theme.  In honor of HF’s 50th anniversary, this year’s theme is School Days, Then and Now.  Earlier this year, we read A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, as well as selected books of award-winning young adult author Sharon Draper.
The enduring themes in The Last Lecture – overcoming obstacles, seizing every moment, and helping others make their dreams come true – makes it an inspiration to all generations, and ideal for a family book discussion.  We hope you can join us for an inspirational evening as H-F parents, students and community members share their perspectives on a book that has influenced so many people.
A limited number of copies of the book will be available for checkout at the Homewood-Flossmoor High School library and the Flossmoor Public Library.  Registration is not required for this event, and light refreshments will be served.  For more information, please contact the Homewood-Flossmoor High School library at 708-335-5566.

CLUB NEWS!

DECA (3/8 - 3/15)
Congratulations to our State Champion H-F DECA Business Team who recently competed in Decatur, IL.
H-F will be sending 12 of our students to the International Competition in Louisville, Kentucky at the end of April.

Each of the last two weekends, the Debate Team attended a tournament and won an award.  Below are summaries of each:
On February 27, HF Debate attended the  SWSC (The Southwest Suburban Conference) Debate Championships - Adam Griesbach and Anthony Ogbuli claimed the Policy Debate Championship af the Southwest Suburban Conference Championships this weekend.  A picture is attached.
On March 6, HF Debate attended the National Forensics League Illini District National Qualifying Event, held every year at Downers Grove South High School.  Two HF teams secured qualification to the NFL Nationals - this is the first time in at least fifteen years this has happened, and possibly the only time it has ever happened in the history of HF Debate.
Juniors Emily Carroll and Laura River, both of whom qualified for Nationals as sophomores last year, qualified again this year.  They did so by defeating two teams from the University of Chicago Lab School, and one team from Whitney Young.  Sophomores Donald Grasse and Margaret Strong also qualified, winning three rounds against Whitney Young (beating Whitney Young JR both on the affirmative and the negative), and losing only to the only non-HF Qualifer, Whitney Young GH.
Both teams will attend the National Forensics League Finals, to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 13 to June 19. Last year Carroll and River's record was 7-5, just one ballot short of advancing to the Nationals elimination rounds - this year, both teams are aiming to improve upon this record and just possibly win a National Championship for HF.

Congratulations to the Varsity Scholastic Bowl team, who won their IHSA Regional on Monday.  The team was led by senior Manny Morone and junior Pete Weber, and defeated Providence Catholic 200-194 in the finals, winning the match on the final question answered by Nick Connolly.
The team, now in the final 32, moves on to Sectionals on Saturday at Bradley-Bourbonnais to attempt to qualify for the final 8 at State.  Good luck!

Congratulations to the Steppers that received 1st Place in a Step Competition at Hillcrest High School.

Congratulations to the Varsity Scholastic Bowl team for winning the Conference tournament on February 24th.  The team defeated Andrew, Lincoln-Way North and Bradley-Bourbonnais on the way to the Conference championship.  The team was led by Jake Bergal, Bryan Ulrich, Pete Weber and Manny Morone.  The Scholastic Bowl competes at IHSA Regionals on Monday, March 8th.  Congratulations!

Tournament of Champions Qualification Earned!
HF Debate scored a huge victory this past weekend at the 55th Annual Barkley Forum for High Schools, held each year on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  This tournament is by invitation only, and generally accepts only the most competitive debate teams (limit two per school) from more than 30 states.  The Policy Debate division included 104 two-person teams representing the "cream of the crop" of nationally recognized Debate programs.
At the Barkley Forum, Senior Astead Herndon and sophomore Donald Grasse, leading HF's two-team delegation, earned their first qualification for the Tournament of Champions (the "TOC", held annually at the University of Kentucky in May), and did so in grand fashion.  In the preliminary rounds, Astead and Donald compiled a record of 4-2, defeating teams from Ashland (OR), Pennsbury (PA), Vestavia Hills (AL), and Alpharetta (GA), while losing to St. Mark's and Kinkaid (both from Texas).  They reached the quarterfinals as the 28th seed, defeating teams from Montgomery Bell Academy (TN) - the 5th seed, and the Westmisnter School (GA) - the 12th seed,, on the way to their TOC qualification.
[What follows is a blow-by-blow account...  just in case you're interested]
In more detail - Astead and Donald reached the tournament's elimination rounds as the 28th seed, pitting them against 5th seed Montgomery Bell Academy (TN) in the double-octofinals.  This was the decisive round - if HF won, they would earn their TOC qualification; if HF Lost, this would have been the 6th time this year debaters from HF had come this close (and the 5th time for Astead and Donald).  Deploying a bold and ultimately successful strategy, the team chose to present a newly researched affirmative case, arguing in favor of large-scale reparations being made to the descendants of African-American slaves living in poverty in the United States.  Astead and Donald won that this was the morally right thing to do, and that, regardless of consequences, it was what justice demanded.  The decision was 3-0, solidifying a stunning upset (28th seeds don't beat 5th seeds very often at all in Debate) and HF advanced to the octofinals.  Vital to this victory were teammates Emily Carroll and Laura River, who were able to find some crucial pieces of evidence among their prepared files; their organization, sharing and kindness helped make this victory possible.  Sharing also in their success is the entire HF team, who contributed essential current-events research last Thursday, and also parents Jenny Carroll and Donald Grasse Sr. for transporting the students to and from the airport!
In the octofinals, held Sunday morning at 8:00am, Astead and Donald debated Westminster (GA).  They again were on the affirmative side, and chose instead to defend their usual case, arguing for the adoption of a public-option-based system of national health insurance for persons living in poverty.  Astead and Donald defeated their opponents' claims that this plan would be better done on a state-by-state basis, arguing that only through national adoption can justice be served as it must, and the economy be benefitted to the required extent.  This decision was a 2-1 decision, and they advanced to the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals in many ways represented the most successful eight teams in the country - to be counted among this number is an honor indeed.  Ironically, through we were in Georgia, in the quarterfinals, Astead and Donald debated local rivals New Trier (IL).  HF was negative, and was forced to argue against the funding of a large-scale educational reform targeted at persons living in poverty.  Try as they might, Astead and Donald could not convince the judges that a more free-marked-oriented educational system would be better.  HF lost this debate on a 3-0 decision.
Some other interesting facts - this was the 7th time in the recent history of HF Debate that students from HF have earned honor of Tournament of Champions qualification.  In 2003, Nick Arrivo and Dylan Rothermel (both class of '04) qualified at the Dowling tournament; in 2005, Joe Maloney ('06) and now assistant coach John Tryneski ('05) qualified at the Maine East tournament; later in 2005, Joe Maloney and Samantha Glass (class of '07) qualified twice, once at the Valley tournament and once at the Blake tournament; in 2006, Samantha Glass and Josh Greenberg (also class of '07) qualified twice, once at the Cedar Rapids-Washington tournament and once at the Dowling tournament.  Before last weekend, it had thus been more than 3 years since HF had won an award at this level.  This is also only the second time in HF's history that they have reached the elimination rounds at the Barkley Forum, the first being when Josh Greenberg and Samantha Glass did so in 2007.  Twice HF has been 4-2 and not cleared (Nick Arrivo and Dylan Rothermel in 2004; David Albrecht and Dan Perry (both class of '03) in 2003).  This also marks the first time ever in the history of HF that a sophomore has earned TOC qualification or advanced to the elimination rounds at the Barkley Forum.

The Debate Team attended the Lane Tech tournament and brought back a slew of awards.
Congratulations to everyone for their overwhelming success this weekend at Lane Tech.
In the Varsity division, three teams reached the elimination rounds:
Astead Herndon and Pascal Fernandes were also 4-1, making them 7th seed (out of 32).  They advanced to the quarterfinals, but Donald and Margaret advanced over them without debating, since they had the better seed.
Laura River was 3rd Speaker (out of 64).
Astead Herndon was 9th Speaker (also out of 64).
Deserving honorable mention is Emily Carroll, who was 13th speaker, and Donald Grasse, who was 15th speaker.
In the Novice division, Aaron Messersmtih and Mikal Slatton were 4-1, and the top seed out pf 28 (there were not undefeated teams in the preliminary rounds).  They advanced to the quartefinals, where they defeated Walter Payton, and then to the semifinals, where they defeated Whitney Young.  This brought them to the finals, where they were defeated by Glenbrook South.
Mikal Slatton was the First Speaker (out of 53).
Aaron Messersmith was the 10th speaker (also out of 53).
It's been a long time since HF had 2nd place finishes in two divisions of the same  tournament - maybe it has never even happened before!  Congratulations to everyone for the outstanding work.

REACH would like to thank all Viking students, faculty & staff who donated canned and dried food items during our Winter Drive.  Special thanks to the English Department for collecting foods and to Friends of Rachel who aided REACH’s efforts.

The next REACH meeting will take place in February.  More details to come.

The Debate Team won some impressive awards last weekend at the Kelly Tournament:
Sophomores Rufus Coates-Welsh and Adam Griesbach achieved a 3-2 record in the preliminary rounds, defeating teams from Taft, Jones and Lincoln Park (all from Chicago).  This made them 15th seed (in a field of 50), and, advancing to the octafinals, Adam and Rufus defeated 2nd seed Lane Tech (this is the largest upset of this year so far).  They then advanced to the quarterfinals, where they defeated the 7th seed (also from Lane Tech).  This brought Adam and Rufus to the semifinals, where they were defeated on a 2-1 decision to Northside College Prep.
Sophomores Donald Grasse and Margaret Strong achieved a 4-1 record in the preliminary rounds, defeating teams from Maine East, Kenwood Academy, Whitney Young, and  Walter Payton.  This made them 5th seed overall (in a field of 50).  They advanced to the octafinals (round of 16) where they defeated 12 seed Walter Payton.  This brought Donald and Margaret to the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by Northside College Prep on a 3-0 decision.
Donald Grasse was the 7th speaker (in a field of 100).
Honorable mention goes also to sophomores Ike Makos and Scott Robertson, who were 3-2 but did not advance to the elimination rounds on speaker points, and sophomores Sean Farris and Khy Sline, who were also 3-2 but did not advance to the elimination rounds on speaker points.
Honorable mention also goes to senior Greg Brookins-Hinton, who was the 15th speaker (in a field of 100).
In the novice division, honorable mention goes to freshmen Colin Gahungu and Mikal Slatton, who were 3-2, but did not advance to the elimination rounds on speaker points.
