William Langland
Grade Level: 9-12
Commonly and, some scholars would remind us, conveniently attributed to William Langland, the medieval narrative poem Piers Plowman comprises three dream visions and exists in at least three markedly different versions. Langland's "biography" has been extracted from passages from the poem: He may have born at Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire, or Colwall or Ledbury, near Great Malvern. He may have been educated at Malvern Priory. He may have moved to London and died in poverty. In the end, all that is certain is the poem itself, which, this site maintains, "is second only in importance to Chaucer's Canterbury tales amongst mediaeval literature."

Grade Level: 9-12
Bartleby.com includes the complete text of The Cambridge History of English and American Literature: An Encyclopedia in Eighteen Volumes. The authorship of the medieval poem Piers Plowman is discussed in Volume II, The End of the Middle Ages. Scholars conveniently attribute the poem, which works as both a social satire and an allegory, to William Langland, about whom nothing is known save what can be extrapolated from the text of the poem itself. Langland, William
Grade Level: 9-12
Piers Plowman, "one of the greatest examples of Middle English alliterative poetry," according to this site, is generally attributed to William Langland. What little is known about Langland's life is based on speculation; that is, scholars posit that if "the dreamer" in Piers Plowman is, in fact, the poet, then Langland may have been born in Malvern Hills in Worcestershire, educated at the Benedictine school in Great Malvern, and perhaps a cleric in London. The entry at this site maintains, "Langland clearly had a deep knowledge of medieval theology and was fully committed to all the implications of Christian doctrine."

Piers Plowman, the medieval narrative poem that is both a vision of a simple life of faith and a social satire, is reputed to have been written by William Langland. The Vision of Piers Plowman comprises three dream visions and exists in at least three markedly different versions. The medieval narrative poem is both an allegory and a social satire and is attributed to William Langland, about whom readers know nothing but speculations based on data from the poem itself: He probably lived from about 1330 to 1386, was born in Malvern near Worcestershire in the West Midlands, was educated for a career in the church but chose to marry, moved to London and earned his living as a psalter-clerk.

William Langland (c.1332?-c.1400?): Piers Plowman
Grade Level: 9-12
While no proof exists, some scholars vigorously argue that Geoffrey Chaucer based the Plowman of The Canterbury Tales on Piers Plowman, attributed to William Langland and widely considered one of the finest examples of Middle English alliterative poetry. According to the Geoffrey Chaucer Page, all that is known about Langland is drawn from supposedly autobiographical content in the poem. "Scholars refer to the author as 'Langland' for the sake more of convenience than of accuracy," this entry posits. The poem exists in three versions, and excerpts from version B are linked to the entry at this site.

"In a summer season when soft was the sun, / I clothed myself in a cloak as I shepherd were, / Habit like a hermit's unholy in works, / And went wide in the world wonders to hear."
