In Search of Scotland

The web site for a ten-part television series that aired on the BBC in England, but you can read all about it here. The show questioned the nature of Scottish national identity through an expansive and historical investigation of the country's history. Read all about Scottish history, including ancient times, the dark ages, the wars of independence, the Renaissance, the Union, the Enlightenment, and modern Scotland.

Scottish Bookbinding: Digital Library

The National Library of Scotland has the pre-eminent collection of decorative bookbindings produced in Scotland during the last five centuries. At this interesting web site, you can explore a digital collection of these books, and see examples of wheel and herringbone bindings. Read an introduction to collection, and then browse the site by time period, beginning in the year 1600. This web site is a wonderful resource for those interested in the history of bookbinding.

Orkneyjar - Stromness and The Hudson's Bay Company

The Orkney Islands in the Atlantic Ocean just north of Scotland were a source of labor and supplies for the Hudson's Bay Company during the eighteenth century. The official Orkney Islands Web site, "Orkneyjar," provides a history of the English fur trading enterprise, and explains why Stromness Island was such an important figure in the expansion of the company during this period. The site contains pictures of the Hudson's Bay Company headquarters in Stromness, as well a links to additional information on the Web.
