Grading Policies
[Revised:  August 18, 2009]
DAILY PERFORMANCE
Respect and Support should be given to the director, any surrogate director, assistant or student assistant.
Folders should always be present at rehearsal. Careful attention should be given to the score and to the interpretation of music symbols. A pencil should always be available.
Proper posture, breathing and support should be practiced during rehearsal.
Conversing with others is detrimental to the rehearsal.
Gum, food and beverages are not permitted in class. (Consequence: student may receive a detention)
CONCERT PERFORMANCE
A student must not miss the various performance presented by the ensemble in which he or she is enrolled; parents should not request excused absences for their children.
An excused absence (serious illness or family emergency) may be made-up within one week of the performance. Students will perform music from the concert for the director. Failure to make-up the missed performance will result in the lowering of the student’s Participation Grade one letter. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a make-up time with the director.
An unexcused absence from a concert will result in the student receiving a “zero” for the missed performance on the student’s Participation Grade. This will have significant impact on the student’s overall grade.
Each student is responsible for learning and memorizing all performance material two weeks prior to a performance.
Professional attitude and proper stage presence and appearance (concert dress) is expected by all students enrolled in the choral program.
CONCERT DRESS
Viking Choir: Robe
MEN: Black dress shoes & socks; black dress slacks; white shirt.
WOMEN: Black character shoes; natural nylons; black shirts; white blouse.
Viking Male Chorus, Bel Canto Choir & Concert Choir:
MEN: Black dress shoes; black socks; white shirt (long sleeve) & black straight tie.
WOMEN: Black dress shoe (no open toe); natural nylons; white blouse (long sleeve).
No jewelry permitted (except medical alert and religious symbols)
TESTS
Students may be asked to perform required music informally or under testing condition.
Students may be required to take written tests over assigned material and from all information covered in class.
ATTENDANCE
Daily attendance is imperative. Chronic absenteeism will effect the singer’s grade.
Extended, excused absence will require outside of class make-up as designated by the director.
Tardiness: a singer should be seated ready to rehearse (with folder) when the bell rings.
Three (3) unexcused tardies results in a “class cut.” School policies on attendance will be in effect (see Student Handbook).
A “class cut” will lower a singer’s Participation Grade by one letter.
ABSENCE
A student will be required to do outside make-up work if they miss four (4) days in any quarter.
Absences will affect the student’s Participation Grade.
Make-up work must be completed within one week upon returning to class.
Make-up work for extended, excused absences will be by contract.
EXTRA CREDIT
Extra credit projects/points will affect only the Participation Grade.
Four (4) extra credit points will raise the Participation Grade one letter.
Extra credit projects must be approved by the director before credit is given.
Make-up work must be completed before extra credit is counted.
EXTRA REHEARSAL
Students may be required to attend extra rehearsal outside of class time as designated by the director. Notice of these rehearsals will be given to the student well in advance. Extra rehearsals will help fulfill the homework requirement of the class.
GRADING POLICY
The semester is divided into two (2) grading quarters and a semester exam. Each quarter counts for 40% of the overall grade and the semester exam counts for 20%.
The following areas comprise a student’s quarter grade: Participation (Daily and Concerts); Music Theory (worksheets); Tests (Vocal & Written).
