7 Principles of Play
Use a move
Turn away from pressure
Play the way you face
Pass and make runs diagonally
Find a seam to receive the ball
Get on a good angle to receive the ball
Win the ball back as quick as possible
Use a move
All players should be able to use a variety of moves that will enable our team to hold possession or to attack. These moves will be stressed strongly in each training session!
Moves to be mastered-
Cap (gullet), step over, scissors, cruyff, Vee, Mathews, reverse Mathews, Rivelino, hip swivel, Keller, Ziko, Hodgi, Beckanbauer, and rakes (Preki)
Turn away from pressure
When in possession of the ball and under duress, our players will turn away from pressure and then look at their options.
This will allow us to keep possession and reduce the number of times that we blindly kick or just play the ball into a defender.
Play the way you face
In order to increase our speed of play, our players will play the ball in direction they are facing when the receive the ball (if pressured-turn away from pressure and then play the ball)
Pass and make runs diagonally
In order for our team to become dangerous with and without the ball, we will play the ball and make runs diagonally. This will allow us more opportunities to penetrate our opponents’ defense and give us more scoring chances!
Find a seam to receive the ball
We must give our teammates an easier option to distribute the ball. It is important for each player to work hard off the ball and find a seam in the defense to receive the ball.
We must stop running away from the ball and turning our backs to our teammate with the ball!
Get on a good angle to receive the ball
Each player should adjust their alignment to a position that will allow them to be on a good angle to support and receive the ball.
We must stop showing our backs to our teammates and stop staying “hidden” behind defenders, eliminate the square the pass!
Win the ball back as quick as possible
All of our players will work very hard to win the ball back as soon as possible.
Our defensive pressure starts with the forwards! If we can win the ball back in the offensive 1/3rd and quick counter we will increase our scoring opportunities. We will double the ball whenever possible in the offensive half and play a “contain” defense in our half of the field.
Look to funnel towards support and double the ball.
Coaches
All of the coaches will work hard stressing these principles in each training session and during game play! Until this system is mastered by all of our players, it is very important for us to be vocal! We will work hard as a staff and communicate before each training session to ensure that these principles are being covered!
